Default So now white meat is as bad as red for "artery-clogging saturated fats"

TL;DR -- all meat will raise your LDL level and you'll die.

One of the problems with science in general and nutrition and medicine in particular is that you can only study things you can measure.

Blood pressure can be measured, so a "normal" range can be set and patients can be profitably medicated into that range -- regardless of whether medication does any good or not. The same applies to LDL, and to a lesser extent with blood glucose. While high BP or LDL might not do you any long-term damage, and may in fact be protective in the elderly, sustained elevated blood glucose will kill you. Of course, too low a blood glucose will also kill you (and probably more quickly than high blood glucose).

This particular study was small (fail point #1), and involved the participants following the 3 different diets for 1 month each (fail point #2) with a 2 - 7 week washout period between each diet (fail point #3).

I'm so very tired of these studies --they're such a waste of time and resources. There's a saying in politics that if you can get people asking the wrong questions, you don't have to worry about the answers. I think the parallel here is that if you measure the wrong things, your answers are meaningless.

(and yes, the NBC report on the study did use the term "artery-clogging saturated fat": )

Started reading it and then thought what is the point, there's always the plant based agend defining things. LDL is a surrogate point, no proof. There is evidence that very high BP and strokes are associated, but as you said Hugh are we now over medicating to bring BP down too much.
