    Default Having made a mess of dietary guidelines they are about to make a new mess

    This article in the Times today suggests that we are about to be advised about sleep patterns by some government sponsored organisiation.

    Knowing, as we now do, how hideously wrong they got the dietary guidelines which were dabbled with here in the 1970s and then set in stone in 1983 do we think anything published by way of guidelines on sleep is going to be remotely helpful?

    I would love to see a set of guidelines which said eat real food, move naturally, listen to what your body needs.

    It’s also likely to add another layer of anxiety to those of us who struggle with insomnia and would dearly love to get more sleep.

    Absolutely Jane!!

    Does the sleep tsar think that telling me I need 7 to 9 hours sleep each night mean that I won't be wide awake at 02:00 and unable to get back to sleep or prevent me from being woken by my inability to regulate temperature at night since the menopause?

    I have a suspicion that it will become another way of blaming us. "I am sorry Mrs Brown, we cannot operate on your xxx because you have not done as you were instructed and slept well for 7 to 9 hours each night since your last appointment at the hospital." "If only you would comply with the protocol all your problems could be resolved, so it really is your own fault that you are feeling so unwell and you cannot expect the nation to bear the cost of your inability to function in society."

    Small rant, but over now!

    I am in bed for at least 9 hours and I'm lucky to get 7 hours sleep, so my Fitbit tells me. So I don't think any guidelines will help me at all.
    One is too many a thousand not enough.

    This is from an article in The Telegraph recently :

    "Sleep has become a national obsession, with a slew of apps, trackers and gurus telling us we need eight hours a night. But don’t fret if you’re getting - and needing - more or less than that. “We have no idea where that figure came from,” says Neil Stanley, a sleep expert and author of How To Sleep Well. “There isn’t a shred of proof we need it.” One possible explanation is the 8-hour day movement, which started in Australia, Britain and America in 1850, and was based around the idea that the working man needed 8 hours of work, 8 hours of leisure and 8 hours of sleep within a 24-hour period.
    “It’s not a bad figure to aim for, but sleep is like height,” says Stanley. “It’s genetically determined and we’re all different. There are short sleepers, who feel fine after four hours, and long sleepers, who need nine hours. So sleep trackers are quite pointless because they’re measuring something that’s as individual as a fingerprint.” Last month, neurologist and sleep disorder specialist Dr Guy Leschziner warned sleep-tracking apps were making people so anxious about getting enough sleep they were developing insomnia."

    It also questioned the 10.000 steps a day and the 8 glasses of water.

    Ah - More government guidelines to roundly ignore in order to stay healthy!

Other research has shown supplemental glycine may help you move more quickly into deep, slow wave sleep.
    particularly interested me. As a post menopausal woman I find my sleep disruption is connected with the inability to regulate body temperature and whilst we grow used to anything given long enough the fact that my husband falls asleep and stays that way all night waking all chirpy in the morning just makes me envious.

    cheapest double to the UK is $882 or £710.02 plus import duty probably another 20% so a lot of money for a mattress topper even though it is water cooled/heated.
    I wonder how long it would be before it sprung a leak?

    They'll be sending Sleep Hygiene teams to your house to make sure you're asleep when you should be and shooting you full of sedatives if you're awake.
