On 30th August 2017 we woke up to the headline “Low-fat diets could increase the risk of an early death: Major study challenges decades of advice as it reveals fat has a PROTECTIVE effect” The PURE (Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology) study had been published and it generated similar ‘low-fat is bad’/’high-carb is bad’ headlines around the world.

The headlines are:
1) This was a large study of approximately 135,000 people aged 35–70 years in 18 countries (covering 5 continents) who were followed-up for an average 7·4 years. The study set out to see if there was a relationship between fats and carbohydrates and cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. The data we have in this field until now, largely cover Europe and North America (with one Australian study). The PURE study added a diversity that we’ve never had before – countries from Canada to Zimbabwe were examined.
